Brent Studer grew up in the northern Iowa town of Clear Lake and is a first-generation college graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics & Astronomy from The University of Iowa and then completed a Master of Science degree in Astronomy. He can be reached at brent-studer@uiowa.edu.

In his prior professional life, Brent was a scoring director at NCS Pearson and supervised the evaluation of student responses to test questions on projects for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) as well as standardized testing programs for a number of states. In 1999 Brent traveled to Casablanca, Morocco, and represented the United States as the Science Scoring Director of the TIMSS-R project.

In addition to spending time with friends and family, Brent enjoys music—especially Ella Fitzgerald and a 100+ album Frank Sinatra collection, classic movies (Mr. Roberts and North By Northwest are favorites), and creating websites. He used to draw a lot and play guitar and really needs to take both of those hobbies up again since they are very relaxing.

It's Sinatra's world—we just live in it.

In his spare time, he teaches astronomy at Kirkwood Community College and although he loves teaching and has done it for over 15 years, he sometimes jokes that he continues teaching just to pay for the German cars that he loves to drive.

With a rather eclectic set of interests, he is proud of the fact that he can explain the origin of the 3K cosmic microwave background radiation just as easily as he can quote the lyrics of Johnny Mercer or Lorenz Hart.

He currently shares his home with his latest BMW, a silver-gray metallic 2004 530i.
