A Typical Summer Day

A typical day in the life of an Upward Bound student starts at 7:15 when breakfast is served in the Burge Residence Hall cafeteria and doesn't end until the scheduled free time or floor meeting ends at about 10 p.m.

Not every day will match this schedule exactly, and things may change in the evenings a bit, but it's a good example of an average weekday.

7:15 a.m.

Breakfast in Burge cafeteria.

8:30 a.m.

The first class is the core class. It is either language arts, mathematics, or science, depending on what two-week block it is.

9:30 a.m.

Seminar I meets. This class is designed to introduce students to a different style of learning structure and gives students the opportunity to explore one topic introduced in the core class in more detail.

11:30 a.m.

Lunch at Burge Marketplace.

12:30 p.m.

After lunch, Seminar II class meets. The topics relate to the core class subject, but students choose which seminar they would like to attend based on interest in that particular aspect of the subject. For example, a student might get to choose from things like Health and Disease during the science block, Math and the Arts during the mathematics block, and Ballad Writing during the language arts block.

2:30 or 3:30 p.m.

Some days, a student may have free time, a foreign language class or technology seminar in the Information Arcade.

4:50 p.m.

It's time to return to Burge Residence Hall for dinner.

6:00 p.m.

Students at the driving range

Learning the finer points of golf during a Lifetime Sports activity.

Free Time! Students have a little time to visit, check out of the residence hall (with at least two buddies!), or just have a chance to unwind from the full day of classes.

7:00 p.m.

It's time for Special Interests and Lifetime Sports! Each evening students go to activities they choose at one of the UB after-school meetings like scrapbook making, going to a golf driving range, beadwork, flower box making, and kickboxing.

8:15 p.m.

Back to the academics. Back to the residence hall for UB Study. Whether it's in the dorm rooms or ITCs, as the title suggests, it's time to study, do homework, or go to a computer lab.

10:00 p.m.

Now it's time to return to the floors to either sleep, study (some more!), call home, or goof-around with the new friends we've met through the program until lights out.
