Bridge students in the Upward Bound Project get to explore college life the easy way. The courses they take are actual University of Iowa summer classes and are paid for through Upward Bound. Bridge students also learn about time management from taking classes and doing classwork.
To be a Bridge student, you have to have graduated from high school the year before. Bridge students take University of Iowa general education classes that will transfer to any college they choose to attend in the fall. They have to study extra hard, and they have more freedom than the other Upward Bound students.
Students say that Bridge requires a lot more responsibility than the regular six-week program does. It's a very good college experience for those who don't have a clue about college life.
Bridge is really challenging, frustrating, and a 'bittersweet sensation' because of time management.
Bridge allows you to experience college life the easy way. Classes are already paid for. A person learns how to improve study management, time management, and learning. It's also kind of like a 'free trial'of college life.
Bridge students get more freedom and free time. In the six-week program, a person has certain study times, and with Bridge you don't [have to study at specific times]. During free time, I study. It seems as if I and other Bridge students get treated with more respect than the six-week participants do.
Our classes are whenever the actual college class begins; lunch and dinner are basically whenever we can get over to Burge and eat. During free time I usually make a schedule.
