Being successful in college requires preparation that begins long before senior year. Preparing involves taking courses during high school that ready students for college-level work, learning how to study effectively, understanding the vocabulary of college: credit or semester hour, Pell Grant, FAFSA, prerequiste, graduation analysis, and more.

In Upward Bound, participants develop and plan for being accepted to college, doing well in high school, and exploring where their interests lie and which career they may be interested in pursuing.
During the Summer Academic Program, 10th grade students participate in a Special Interest Seminar that explores career interests, education requirements, and realistic lifestyle expectations based on specific career choices. Even though actually attending college may be two or more years in the future, Upward Bound participants learn that decisions made today affect their choices after graduation from high school.
Students who are entering the 11th grade participate in an ACT Prep Seminar during the summer. In this seminar, they receive 15 hours of instruction that addresses test-taking strategies, content on the ACT, and take practice exams.
