Growing up on a family farm in Riverside, Iowa (also the "future" birthplace of Captain James Kirk), Dana Thomann knows her farm background has definitely given her an appreciation for perseverance, homegrown beef, 4-H, and the outdoors. Dana can be reached at dana-thomann@uiowa.edu.
Dana is a first-generation college graduate who attended The University of Iowa and earned double-majors in Communication Studies and Journalism after completing high school at Highland High School. As an avid writer, she especially enjoyed taking courses through the Undergraduate Writer’s Workshop while in college.
Upon completion of her undergraduate degrees, Dana taught middle school Language Arts on the Rosebud Reservation through Teach For America from 2005-2007, where she says her students taught her more than she ever thought possible.
While it was hard leaving her students in South Dakota, Dana is incredibly excited to be closer to her family and continue working with students through the Upward Bound Project. Students inspire her to do the best work she possibly can—students are our future.
On weekends, you may find her antiquing in small-town Iowa with her sister, baking, writing, or chatting with her parents on the family farm. She recently planted apple trees on her parent’s farm and cannot wait until they bear fruit!
